Męczennicy (Martyrs), based on the play Märtyrer by German dramatist Marius von Mayenburg and directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna, will be shown with English subtitles at the TR Warszawa theater.
TR Warszawa has a reputation as one of the most innovative theaters in Poland. Jarzyna, who is artistic director of TR Warszawa and one of Poland’s most internationally acclaimed theater directors, has both directed the play and adapted the original text for the Polish production.
In his version, Jarzyna probes the mechanisms behind fanaticism, trying to see how it functions in contemporary world.
The main character of Męczennicy, Lidka, is a high school student from Warsaw who peruses the Bible in search of answers to the eternal questions of who she is and why she is what she is. The sudden shift in her interests and behavior alarms her father and the girl becomes estranged from her classmates and teachers. But Lidka doesn’t care what others think about her. She now only has one goal and believes in one truth, for which she is ready to make any sacrifice.
Through this dramatic story of people who are ready to pay the ultimate price for what they believe in, Jarzyna explores where religious and political extremism come from. He also explores the meaning of faith in the liberal world of today.
The sets to Męczennicy were designed by Latvia’s Monika Pormale and the costumes by Anna Nykowska. The music to the show was composed by Michał Lis and Piotr Lis. The cast features well-known Polish theater and film actors, including Roma G±siorowska, Piotr Głowacki and Dawid Ogrodnik.
