EU funding for safer roads in Kranj

SLOVENIA, April 14 - As part of this EU-funded project, the Urban Municipality of Kranj will develop shared-use paths, i.e. paths used by both pedestrians and cyclists, between the Slovenski trg square and the Stritarjeva cesta road in Kranj. The bulk of works will be carried out on the platform in front of the Kranj city hall, a building declared a cultural monument of national importance. The municipality will eliminate 53 parking spots and turn the 2,554-square meter platform into a car-free zone reserved for pedestrians and cyclists only. Additionally, it will install traffic calming measure to create a safer environment where walking is both practical and enjoyable. The redeveloped area will also feature a new bike docking station as part of a public bike sharing system in Kranj and wider region. The latter will be set up to encourage residents to choose cycling as a transportation option, either to commute to work, run errands or simply enjoy a leisurely ride.

The project will be carried out in the scope of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy 2021-2027, under priority Sustainable urban mobility. It will pursue specific objective Promoting sustainable multimodal urban mobility, as part of transition to a net zero carbon economy.

Worth a total of €1,553,131.10, the project will receive €621,252.44 from the European Regional Development Fund.
