48 charities are set to benefit from the profits made at last November’s three-day Bazar International event, which took place at LuxExpo.

The donations were handed out at the "Remise de Chèques" (check donation) ceremony last Thursday, 25 April, at the BGL BNP Paribas Bank in Kirchberg.

A sum of €505,000 was divided out between the organisations, which are spread between Luxembourg, wider Europe, Africa and Asia.

The three local charities are Ambulanz Wonsch, Luxembourg, which strives to fulfill the last wishes of bedridden and terminally ill patients who can only be transported by ambulance and with escorts.

Also, CBM Luxembourg Foundation which was set up to support on-site training for much needed opthalmologists in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

In addition, Médecins du Monde - Luxembourg/ Esch-sur-Alzette was also earmarked to received funds. They work to supply medication and psycho-social support to the Centre d'Accueil, de Soins et d'Orientation d'Esch.

President of the Bazar International, Carmen Decalf said a diverse range of “incredible and wonderful” charities were set to benefit from the funds raised. She paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers and organisers who made the Bazar a huge success, with a record 35,000 visitors attending the event, she confirmed.

“Congratulations to all volunteers, stand and board members and thank you for all your work, efforts and achievements, which have been rewarded by the results, the best results ever. It is a great moment of the year today. It is always a wonderful moment, a very emotional time to be able to support so many organisations and charity projects around the world.”

Ms Decalf added that the organisation’s new logo, which features five different coloured hearts, “reflects the spirit of Bazar International, to do things from the heart and in all simplicity.”

HRH Grand Duchess Marie-Teresa was in attendance and addressed the gathering, speaking about La Fondation du Grand Duc et de la Grande Duchesse, the charity she and her husband set up over 40 years ago.

“I'd like to say a huge thank you to the donors, organisers and volunteers who, through their commitment, make this generous gesture towards the most disadvantaged, and particularly children, possible.

“This donation to our Foundation enables us to support, via housing subsidies, young single-parent women in Luxembourg, confronted after the Covid with rising rents, who would not have been able to pursue their higher education without this help. A huge thank you.”

The 48 charities selected come under seven different categories:

Social reinsertion for homeless or abused people; Medical care, sanitary medical equipment; Primary school education and support; Higher education vocational training; Therapeutical camps and recreational activities; Therapies and support for people with disabilities and lastly Fighting human trafficking, forced labour and child prostitution.

Mark your calendars! Bazar International to take place on 15-17 November 2024
