Kids in teen program stop attack on Kansas City, Kansas, store manager
A manager at Hey Sugar Ice Cream and Candy Shop in Kansas City, Kansas, was attacked by teenagers on Wednesday afternoon. "All of a sudden, we hear a commotion, you know, commotion and yells. We turn around. Next thing you know, we see the lady getting assaulted so quickly.""They were fist-closed, balled up, punching her in the face like she was a man. And it was sad to see. It was sad to see," said Rudy Perez of the Lowriding 2 Success Bike Club, located across the street.Fifteen members of the club ran across the street to stop the attack.Hearing the woman's screams, Perez said, "We started running towards over there, and we yelled because we wanted to stop the assault right away."Lowriding 2 Success founder Martin Cervantes Sr. said his club rehabs bikes and troubled teens, and he wasn’t surprised his club members did not hesitate to help."It is the right thing to do, and we would do it again in a heartbeat. No hesitation... this is our village."Teens are often referred to the club after a run-in with the law or trouble at school."The '2' in the name means 'second chance.' The kids here deserve a second chance," he said.Part of their probation requirements includes attending classes in custom bike building and learning how to "reimagine their lives" every Wednesday evening.Cervantes said, "You know, it's very simple. A lot of our students, they are very impulsive. And they just let their feelings out and overreact sometimes. So that's what we do. And that's what they actually showed yesterday. You know, they thought about it and thought about the consequences."The program has been operating for two years and boasts 27 graduates who have gone on to productive jobs and college courses. The manager of Hey Sugar suffered scrapes and bruises to her face but is expected to recover.Cervantes' wife, Jalynda, said the manager is a friend and will need time to heal."Nobody deserves what happened to her by being attacked by those youths. And they did get some punches. And she does have some scratches on her, but the emotional turmoil is going to take the longest to heal," she said.
