MADISON (WKOW) — Wisconsin Democrats are urging lawmakers to pass a new package of gun control bills. The legislation was introduced Tuesday, and supporters say the measures are common sense.
The proposed legislation includes four bills aimed at addressing gun violence in the state. One bill proposes a 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases from a federally-licensed firearms dealer. Another aims to expand background checks to cover all gun sales in Wisconsin. A third bill seeks to ban ghost guns, and the fourth bill would create a process for law enforcement or a family member to petition a judge to temporarily remove guns from someone deemed an extreme risk to themselves or others.
State Rep. Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) expressed urgency about the situation. "We should be embarrassed. In the state of Wisconsin, there are absolutely solutions to this violence," Stubbs said. "There are concrete steps that we can take to make our community safer for all. We must do something in this state, and we must do it right now."
However, similar bills have faced opposition from Republicans in the past. The debate over gun control continues as both parties hold strong positions on the issue.
