VCSF gives $3K in grants for theater

VOORHEESVILLE — The Voorheesville Community and School Foundation has awarded $3,000 in grant funding to local performing arts programs, renewing a long-standing commitment to school and community-based theater.

A grant of $1,000 was awarded to the Voorheesville Dionysians high school drama club in support of its production of “Tarzan.” Performances will be held at the Lydia Tobler Performing Arts Center at Voorheesville Middle School on March 23, 24, and 25. The greater Voorheesville community is invited to enjoy a wonderful show and senior citizens may attend free of charge.

All Voorheesville high school students are welcome to participate in the drama club, whether on the stage, behind the scenes, or as student musicians. “Drama club productions provide a unique opportunity for high school students to develop skills in the performing arts … A grant from our foundation ensures that the show will go on,” says a release from the foundation.

VCSF also awarded a grant of $2,000 to the Classic Theater Guild Inc. in support of its Summer Festival, formerly known as the Helderberg Theater Festival, which will be held at Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont from July 26 to Aug. 4. The Summer Festival will include a children’s play as well as a production of Shakespeare.

The Classic Theater Guild is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to advance education in the theater arts. Casting calls, auditions, and rehearsals for the Summer Festival are held in the Voorheesville area and local volunteers are recruited for set design and construction, costume creations, and other related work, offering residents the chance to learn and contribute to theater arts through a community-based event. With this grant, the Classic Theater Guild will continue its 11-year tradition of offering free summer theater.

The Voorheesville Community and School Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in 1999 to enhance educational, cultural, athletic, and organizational opportunities for the students and residents of the village of Voorheesville, the town of New Scotland, and the Voorheesville Central School District. The foundation relies on the support and donations from the community to carry out its mission.
